syllic: ([merlin] je suis)
[personal profile] syllic

So I had a story in June.

I thought it was finished.

It turns out it very much was not.

Someone saw it then, and then again when I realised the problem, and then again... and again... and again.

[ profile] nicolasechs has seen part of it now, and helped to make it immensely better for having had her eyes on it, as she always does. It has since then been rehashed three ways, at least, and is still being reworked, and I am struck by the notion that having someone seeing it once it's all done--without my harassing them about it every step of the way, without seeing it for the Frankenstein that it clearly is--would be a good idea.

The catch? It's 35,000 words and growing with each ear I sew on (my monster is like a KFC chicken, genetically grown to provide six tasty appendages). And I ideally would like to post it as soon as possible after it has been hit with an electric shock, as someone has patiently, patiently, waited for it to be finished for a long time, now.

It's about a year in Camelot, as an arranged wedding approaches. Merlin/Arthur, with house-of-ill-repute humour (YES, SUCH A THING EXISTS! (I THINK)) along the way.

Any takers for the admittedly unappealing task of betaing 35,000 words at speed? I am looking for cohesion, and truth of character, and flow (as well as anything else you think is relevant).

My thanks would be endless.

(PS: For those of you asking, "Do you even own a diary, [ profile] syllic, you infidel?" The answer is: Yes. Yes I do. And Part Four of Easy There (Or, How I Learned to Hate the WIP And Love The Bomb) is also in the pipeline. My (by now worthless on this matter!) word that it will be up as soon as my thesis is submitted.

PPS: And comments. Comments! Watch me (slowly, alas) put the tractor-traction reverse gear on my FAIL.)

I just wanted to say how extremely excited/happy I am to read all of the above.

And how happy I will be to 'read' all that is mentioned above.

Whoot! for your amazing creativity, and thank you so much for the word on Easy There.

Ha! Thank you so much for saying something this lovely.

I hope you enjoy the new story (I actually have three long things backed up, which I'm struggling to get into shape alongside my thesis (Deadline: IMMINENT)--I hope you get a little pleasure for reading each.)

Easy There. God, EASY M-FING THERE. I want it out of my hair like one would want, say, peanut butter out of one's hair: peanut butter is pretty good (tasty! full of energy! good consistency!), but only in certain circumstances, you know? There is a time that is not a time for peanut butter, and that time is now.

Or something.

Please allow me to send HAPPY HAPPY THANKS THANKS vibes your way in return!

Totally can offer my help with speed beta. I am terrible at grammar and spelling but I can do all the rest. *g*

And yay, it's pretty cool to see you around again! :)

It is lovely to see you too--truly it is. My apologies for not having been around; my immune system has been intermittent like Moldovan electricity, and the energy minister in charge of my body is the sort of corrupt official one encounters in Dostoyevsky novels, it appears.

How have you been? I hope the answer is, "[ profile] syllic, so brilliant you would not believe." This would make me happy.

Thank you so much for offering--you are shiny and amazing and generous. (Er, I might at some point ask if you'd be willing to look at the V for Vendetta thing again... I have what one might call an institutional backlog, here.), right?

I hope things are looking up for you because I don't think Moldovan electricity is especially great. *g*

I have been great mostly and in the times when I wasn't I would watch some Merlin and there were back the happy times. :)

yup, is right and you can basically give me anything to read and I'd be happy to do it!

I exist.

This summer--well, I was robbed. I got on a LONG ferry going in the wrong direction. I was stranded in a rural area. There was puking. Ugly puking. It was the stuff terrible travel novels are made of--the schadenfreude-themed chapters, that is.

I was fighting the good thesis fight: my immune system had deserted me at the trenches without my knowledge. Some visits to rooms with Clinical Cheerfulness: A Study In Oils hanging on the wall, though, and things are back together (even if, alas, by 'things' I do not mean 'my thesis, due now').

HOW ARE YOU? I need an address for you, if possible, because I have a random collection of things for you that could well have been put together by Peter Stillman in The New York Trilogy. (I don't know if you've read it, but by the end he's pretty much a wandering bag man (though he does wash regularly, at the YMCA)).

Not an exciting introduction, I know, but I promise it's good, and Balkans-postcard inclusive.

I have seen your Big Bang (but not read it yet): I am in awe of the effort that must have gone into it and will review as soon as I am able.

Oh baby. *pets* I'm so sorry to hear that you haven't been feeling well. Sherlock Holmes is very soothing, I suggest listening to that. Next care package I send will have lots of 'feel better' stuff in it.

I send you address, and I am endlessly excited about the whole thing. Oh, and in case you were wondering, I know you from a knitting website. In case you ever have an opportunity to meet anyone from my family. I tried the whole (semi, I didn't mention the gay porn part) honesty thing when I hung out with [ profile] staraflur this week, and the parentals were a bit twitchy.

I hopes you like the Big Bang! Read it when/if you can, I know that the thesis must be eating huge amounts of your time right now.

Ah you are back!

Okay, if you don't need straight word for word beta, I can do it. Starting law school pretty soon so no time for anything more!

Man so this is not even the v for vendetta one? YOU HAVE SO MANY LONG THINGS.

My dear [ profile] staraflur, of the amazing icons!

I am, indeed, back. How have you been? You have a Big Bang story: it sounds beauuuuutiful, and I am dying to read it. When my thesis is submitted? Me and Box of Magic will be close like... spring rolls and dipping sauce, or something equally visually attractive (visually attractive to me, anyway).

Law school? That sounds very exciting indeed: I am starting The Unknown in October, though I am thinking of more grad school next year. Congratulations on being accepted (ages ago, I am sure (!)) and I hope you are looking forward to it.

This is not the V for Vendetta one, no. My backlog is pretty epic by this point, because my year in 2009 appeared to self-organise into massive blocks of HEALTH FAIL and SCHOOL CATCH-UP FAIL. I am not too proud to admit that I cried a bitter tear when I missed my second Box of Magic deadline while on a puke-adventure bus in a rural hinterland.

Once this is posted, I am doing Easy There, and then this V for Vendetta thing, and then something called In Possession of a Fortune, which is a weirdish companion story (not related, just... oddly companionable) to this one. There is an SPN story about battle children in there somewhere, too (er...).

I just--I've written a lot this year while under a lot of self-imposed pressure, and then gone back and looked again and thought--you were in a hurry WHY, exactly? I'm beginning the slow procedure of getting everything ready now, though.

I should have said, before anything else: THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for offering to do this; I am extremely thankful. Whatever you have (time) to say will be useful, I am certain, whether you catch a typo by chance or have a general problem with one of the four main sections. Should I direct it to the address on your profile?

Thank you again, and do let me know what is going on in your life--I would love to hear.

Omg that gwen icon!

(also, sometimes when you use this one I think you are me)

Hahah I did indeed write something very very long. I hope you like it, since lord only knows if I'll be able to finish my reel fic! I was sorry to see yours didn't work out, too.

I did The Unknown for a bit, hahaha. As you can see, I retreated.

(oh man I am sorry about that! they were semi-flexible with them, too!)

Ugh I have so so many plans. I originally signed up for four reel fics (don't look at me like that), but various not-as-bad-as-yours circumstances combined and now I am hoping I will be able to finish even one. I agree, though, about the hurry. I always want to GET IT DONE and, especially with these, I am worried now about overlooking things. So yes, proceed at the pace that works for you, not us even though we demand it out of love. Outside of fandom, there is law school and moving out on my absolute own for the first time ever, which will be both exhilarating and terrifying as far as I can tell, and probably a bit sad.

That address is fine, yes! I'll do as much as I can tonight, and if I can't finish it then it'll be sometime tomorrow.

I am just going to say that I am kind of ridiculously relieved to see you post, because I was worried about you and didn't really know if it was my place to find out in a stalkery way if you were okay (which clearly you weren't, but at least it wasn't the bloody death epidemic that's been sweeping through fandom and real life).

Also, I'm absolutely up for a quick beta of anything that comes with the words "arranged marriage" and Merlin/Arthur attached, be that 35k words or 50k :P

Stalkerdom: its benefits are seriously downplayed, is all I will say.

Sent you a long e-mail, but thought I'd better reply here to and say THANK YOU (for offering to read, and for asking after me, both totally undeserved on my part, I am certain).

I should say--I've just realised this--that when I said 'arranged marriage' I didn't mean YE OLDE ARRANGED MARRIAGE THAT WE ALL KNOW AND LOVE, but "An arranged marriage for Arthur, by Uther, which we don't know and we don't love." I don't know if this changes your opinion about reading--I would understand completely if it did--so I thought I'd better say that outright.

Have I mentioned thank you?

So you don't really know me, but I may be one of the people who had a chance to see this before you were ready to post it. I thought it was marvelous and would be happy to do whatever I can to help. I'd gladly read for flow/cohesion/etc., copy check, cheerlead, and/or send happy thoughts.

You do marvelous work, and I'd be delighted if I might be able to help in any small way.

Lilith, hi!

I see you saw my moment of MONUMENTAL TOOLERY (remembering to re-lock a post--how hard can it be?); thank you for being so kind about that short first section, and thank you more profusely for agreeing to look at the rest--I would be really happy if you would.

I have a few other people who have been kind enough to say they'll look, but if you're still interested, I would very much welcome your thoughts--is there a particular address I should forward the file to, if so?

Thank you for the happy thoughts, too; I need to take this time to say that your icon is AMAZING and happy-thought-inducing indeed. I have been up all night, but I will think about it before I sleep (for two whole hours--yes!).

Here's to us speaking more in future, and to my inability to succeed at simple life tasks, which you forgive so kindly.

Have sent it (my thought detour went MMH APRICOT SALAD ALSO CHATTER OF BRITAIN LET ME RE-READ THAT OOOH APRICOT SALAD, WHEN DID SHE MAKE THAT POST NOM NOM), along with a rather incoherent e-mail that I can only apologise for.

This story is--a chimaera, but the Ugly Duckling of chimaeras, if you get my drift (that subtle, nuanced drift that was a clear-cut analogy, that is). There are sections that are two months old, sections that are two weeks old, and sections that are two hours old. Any amount of eyes on it (no matter how large) will be beneficial, I am certain.

THANK YOU for offering to do this--it's extremely kind, truly--and please let me know if I can return the favour at some point?

Heh -- I would have to *have* something for you to beta before you could review for me in return, although you shouldn't think for a moment that I won't take you up on that if I become randomly inspired.

Comments on the first part have been sent!

(And the apricot pasta salad was AWESOME, but it lost something after being refrigerated. Booo.)

Hi. So: I do not know if I have mentioned this, but--your username? Fills me with glee.

Thank you for being so friendly, and saying something so kind. I hope the fourth part of Easy There is enjoyable for you (even if only a little!), and uh--let us talk more in future, about Betty La Fea (who is totally not fea--¿estás viendo la colombiana?) and other stuff, too.

Hahahaha! Your shame amuses me. ^_^ I'm just glad to see that you're still alive (and well, I hope). You vanished off the face of the earth and I'm sure I wasn't the only one starting to wonder.

Just out of curiosity, weren't you also working on a "V for Vendetta" fic a while back, too?

Can I just say that I'm glad you live? Cause I am...very. SO very even!
Also, prospect of more writing from you? SO very enthusiastic like WOAH! I'm sure you've had a million offers to your request but I shall put mine in with them also. I do put forward the warning that I may end up getting a little distracted from the beta-mission with my no-doubt squeeing over the fic heh -.-;;; but yes, my offer is there. Offence shall not be taken at all if it is not accepted ^_^ I look forward to reading it whenever it appears! <3
